A morning at the apple orchard

This has been one of the most unusual springs in Minnesota. We broke so many weather records, which resulted in an unusually early bloom of the state’s apple trees. So, unfortunately, when the weather returned somewhat to normal with cold nights, the apple orchards really suffered.

My friend Gretchen and her husband, Mike, own and operate Sweetland Orchard down in Webster, Minnesota, and they were hit especially hard. If you visit their website, Gretchen has posted videos of many of the news stories in which they were featured.

I drove down to Sweetland a week ago for a visit, and Gretchen and Mike gave me a wonderful tour of the orchard, and I got to visit with their adorable daughter, Audrey!

Below is my favorite picture of Audrey and Gretchen. I just love the slight profile I got of Gretchen and the adorable little look on Audrey’s face!  If you’re looking for some good apples or cider this fall, head down to Sweetland.  While their crop did suffer with the spring freeze, they will still have a good variety of apples come fall.

Meals on Wheels makes a difference

I was honored to be asked to work with Metro Meals on Wheels on a project to increase awareness of the benefits of their services. It has been one of those projects with unexpected rewards.

They are creating a video to be released later this year, and during the video shoots with East End Productions, I’m capturing still photographs of some of the recipients. We’ve only done two of several shoots so far, but the theme is consistent, and I expect it will continue–heartfelt gratitude. Meet Norm and Doug. Doug is shown with Kelsey, Outreach Manager for Metro Meals on Wheels and lead for this project.

These folks absolutely rely on Meals on Wheels to provide them with healthy, tasty meals. Both Doug and Norm commented that without Meals on Wheels, they would not be able to maintain a healthy diet and more importantly, probably would not be able to live independently like they do today. It’s key for their health, but more importantly, they also really appreciate the social aspect, too. They genuinely connect with the volunteers who deliver their meals and have peace of mind knowing that someone is checking on them regularly.

I was especially touched by the fact that they were both Meals on Wheels volunteers before they became recipients, which motivated them to be part of this project. They know how much the program means to so many people and wanted to express their gratitude to all of the volunteers!

Met some great people!

The best part of my job as a photographer is meeting such interesting, fun and genuinely nice people! Linda called me just a couple of weeks ago needing a college graduation picture of her son, Anthony. What a treat! Anthony and both of his parents came to the studio. Anthony was such a pleasure to work with, and we really had fun going through the images afterwards with his folks picking out their favorites.

Also, thank you for the Mac tips, Anthony! I know you will be wildly successful at whatever you set your mind to. Congratulations on your degree from Gustavus and good luck in graduate school!

Love this kind of response!

Another FB friend said, “Bond… James Bond.” Makes all the extra hours worth while!

Fun marketing piece

I love this mailer that Heatherlee created. I NEVER could come up with something as creative as this! I ran an ad at MCAD for a freelance designer, and am I ever glad that she contacted me :-)

Do you know who the person is with the camera?

Some things are truly meant to be

We have all heard the saying that “some things are meant to be,” but I truly believe that was the case on February 29 this year.

I am on-call for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep only once or twice a month. And I admit that each day that I am on call I say a little prayer that there are no calls. When I get a text on those days, I cringe, thinking that once again some wonderful young family may be facing the loss of their infant.

Unfortunately, I did get that call in February. I packed up my gear and headed down to United Hospital. And, as is always the case, I so did not want to see the pain and sorrow in that young mother’s face. The nurses are always so amazingly supportive, appreciative and helpful, and this case was no exception. The nurse escorted me into the room, where to my surprise, the whole family was present. The family love and support in this room was palpable.

Melody has kindly allowed me to share my story about her beautiful daughter Solveig. Thank you, Melody! I was so touched by the fact that both grandparents were there; aunt and uncle were there; their family minister was there; and Melody and Erik’s two young children. And, of course, their beautiful little daughter Solveig.

I was equally amazed at the wonderful experience that Melody and Erik were sharing with their children. They knew their little sister was gone, and while they were a bit uncomfortable, they were also very much engaged in the experience of saying goodbye to their little sister.

I am always so humbled by the experience of being a part of these families’ most intimate of life’s experiences. I especially want to thank Melody and Erik for allowing me to be a part of this treasured moment for their family. The serendipity is that Melody and her family are actually from Mahtomedi and Erik’s family is from White Bear Lake where my studio is located. Her father remembers going to movies at the Avalon Theater, which is where my studio is now located. In my calls for NILMDTS, I have met families from North Dakota, Wisconsin and out-state Minnesota.  I really do believe I was meant to take this call on this February 29th day. Being so close allowed me to get a photograph printed and ready for them in time for little Solveig’s funeral as well.

My heartfelt condolences to you, Melody and Erik, and again, my gratitude for allowing me to share in your most intimate of  life’s moments. I delivered Solveig’s pictures to Melody this morning and had the opportunity to share a wonderful hug with her.

Head shots congruent with brand

True confessions — I frequently check LinkedIn to see which image my clients will choose for their profile pictures.   Love your choices, Lara and Terri!

Lee Branding is an agency to watch

Just finished editing my shoot for Lee Branding. What a great success story! Terri Lee, President of Lee Branding, left her secure fulltime job to form Lee Branding, and I predict she will be wildly successful. She has more energy, spunk, talent and vision than any woman I’ve met in a long, long while.

We not only did head shots of her talented staff, we also got some fun shots of their offices to use on their upcoming website redesign. They office in this cool building over in the northeast artists’ district. I just love the way she’s decorated their space.

When Terri says they have fun at work, I believe her after spending the day with their team. They were gracious, humble, accommodating and, yes, fun!

Lara is their designer extraordinaire.  She worked on two recent projects for me for KeliComm and did an awesome job. I can’t wait to work with her on my upcoming rebranding for Jen Kelly Photography. She has amazing talent!

Pics for match.com versus LinkedIn

After several months of exploring a number of different market segments, I firmly landed on business photography and custom portraits. It’s a great fit with my corporate communications background, and I admit I relate more to working professionals than two-year-olds. That’s not to say that I don’t take the occasional encore wedding, and I love custom portraits, which often include families and children. However, I recently found myself in a market segment that I never would have imagined–profile photos for dating websites like match.com.

During two recent head shot portrait sessions for professional women, we got some really fun pictures that were probably a bit too “fun” for LinkedIn. Both of the women offered up that they are on match.com and felt that these images would be perfect for their match profile. We took the time to talk about what kind of guy they were looking for so we could customize their image to their personal brand and that of their ideal partner. There is a difference between what you would (should) post on these respective sites.

Less than two weeks later, I had another client approach me specifically for a profile portrait for match.com, so the whole photoshoot had that as an ultimate goal. Now that was a blast–changing up poses, posture, choosing just the right jewelry, hairstyle, playing with depth of field, etc. to come up with what we felt would be the best persona for her match profile picture.

After the session, I coaxed her into showing me some profile photos on the match.com website. Really? Some of these guys are trying to nab their soulmate, and they look like they just finished changing the oil or mowing the lawn!

My clients have promised to keep me posted on how well their new picture helps them find the right guy. Can’t wait to hear the updates! Hey, maybe I’ll be doing a few encore weddings this summer.

Thank you, Libby!

A special thank you to my good friend Libby for helping with Fun Photo Fridays. I couldn’t have done it without you! And, more importantly, it was a lot more fun WITH you ;-)  Also, thank you for capturing these snapshots of a few of the portrait and consultation sessions. I never get pictures of myself in action.
